Monochromatic

Based on real events, Monochromatic is a short film that explores alternative mental health therapies, through the story of one young woman’s experience of psychosis. The film follows her journey as she focuses her mind and tells her story through the creation of a monochromatic self-portrait.

A picture is worth a thousand words

Monochromatic allows the audience to experience Hannah’s psychosis, both her hallucinations and healing, by breaking the boundaries of linear story-telling.

During the writing process, the team were heavily influenced by an article exploring the benefits of art therapy, particularly in the case of psychosis, as opposed to medication being the first port of call. We were particularly drawn to a painting created by Malin, a young woman undergoing treatment, and our film is inspired by Malin's imagery and story. You can read the article here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-56097028.

Ultimately, Monochromatic aims to raise awareness of alternative mental health therapies. One adult in eight (12.1%) receives mental health treatment, with 10.4% receiving medication and 3% receiving psychological therapy. https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/statistics/mental-health-statistics-people-seeking-help

    MEET THE TEAM

    Alexandria Anfield

    Co-writer & Director

A northern lass originally from the City of Hull, who loves the colour yellow, doing a jigsaw and can get very nerdy about theatre history, why musicals literally rock her world, and geography.

She has worked in the theatre industry for the past decade. As a director, she has worked on many shows ranging from Shakespeare to opera. One of her favourite projects was Trainspotting live! (don't sit near the toilet!).

Monochromatic will be her first screenplay.

Favourite piece of art: Van Gogh's 'Starry night' (particularly as a 1000 piece jigsaw- took me weeks!).

    Jonny Giles

     Co-writer & Composer

Hello, I'm Jonny, one of the writers and composer of Monochromatic. I'd say my love of film originally stemmed from film scores and my fascination with how they can help tell a story. From an early age, I would listen to my favourite pieces over and over. Eventually, I became obsessed with every aspect of storytelling, particularly the screenwriting process.

My favourite painting is 'A Street in Stockport' 1930 by L.S. Lowry; it captures the character of Stockport and the mundanities of everyday life beautifully. It's a privilege to live a stone's throw away from where Lowry himself once stood and found such inspiration.

    Jordan Harris

     Director of Photography

Hi, I'm Jordan, I'm going to be the DOP for Monochromatic, meaning I'll be the guy behind the camera and the one editing the film. I'm passionate about all things creative, from music composition to 3D design, but my main passion is creating fictional films which I've been doing ever since I got hold of an old camera and made my first stop motion film with action figurines around the age of 10 (which will never see the light of day). I'm excited to work on this project because I believe it has an important message, as well as the fact there will be a lot of very interesting imagery we will be playing with which will get my creative juices flowing!

Some of my favourite pieces of art are the artworks created by Aria Fawn for David Maxims Micic's double album "EGO " and "ECO". I love the intricacies within the art and how both pieces represent the music visually.

    Laura Sharma

     Producer

Originally from Teeside, I moved to Manchester to pursue acting after gaining a place on the BA Acting course at Manchester School of Theatre. 3 years and a pandemic later I have now graduated and steering myself into a career in producing. Prior to joining the Monochromatic team, I had started my own theatre company, 'Two Pence Productions', and hosted a virtual scratch night showcasing some of the outstanding talent the north has to offer.

Monochromatic is my first venture into film production, I am learning everyday from this amazing team and cannot wait to share what we have been working on with you all.

My favorite piece of art at the moment is Hilo Chen's 'Wo Ladies in the train' 1972. This piece is such a simple concept but I absolutely love the colours and the way the light seems to make the fabrics glisten.

    SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

Climate change and living sustainably are rising higher and higher in societies priorities. More and more of us are choosing to make more sustainable choices, whether that be taking a reusable cup to get your morning coffee or taking canvas bags on your weekly shop.

As a team we are extremely passionate about doing our part to reduce the carbon footprint of this film and bring in more sustainable practices to our production. Our producer has completed the sustainable production course delivered by Albert, the leading authority on environmental sustainability for TV + Film, and is working towards new methods to cut our emmisons and work towards a carbon neutral production.

Some of the key areas we are looking to make more sustainable choices in are:

    • Travel
      - casting local talent means we reduce the need for long distance travel.
      - Allocating allowances for public transport means where our actors do need to travel they can choose a more environmentally friendly method of travel

    • Catering
      - By pre-planng meals and allocating funds from the budget we will be self catering and using refillable water bottles. We hope this will eliminate unnecessary plastic waste from 'meal deals' and reduce our need for single use plastics.

    • Materials
-We are making it our mission to buy as little as possible brand new. For costume we are using a mixture of the actors own clothes and finding anything extra from charity shops. For props and set we are asking our communities for donations of art supplies which can then be given back to various art groups giving them a second or third life.

If you would like to donate any art supplies (easles/paint brushes/canvases/paints) please get in touch via our email: monochromaticfilm@gmail.com
