Director's Statement
'There is no right way to grieve.
As an actor with over 20 years of experience in the industry, I have spent many years living in hotels and have always been fascinated by the thought of the many millions of stories that have played out within their walls; how a seemingly innocuous room can hold vastly different memories and meanings for different people. I also know, firsthand, the value that stepping into a physical space can have when trying to understand and connect emotionally with a character or a storyline. In my directorial debut, I wanted to explore the idea of inhabiting the physical space of a violent crime and how, although unconventional, that might help a person achieve some closure.
The film, and Sophie's character in particular, is also a comment on the way we, as a society, have come to sensationalise true crime. Columnist Eric Zorn wrote 'As we rage at the perpetrators and mourn the dead, we tend to forget the survivors.' I hope that this film serves as a reminder that behind every lurid headline, documentary, book cover, and podcast is a person quietly grieving the loss of someone they loved.'

Audience
Nuanced and character-driven, Each Coming Night is told exclusively from the female perspective, reflecting the delicate balance of strength and fragility that runs through each of us. It's a film for anyone who's ever felt alienated by their grief or trauma; for anyone who's been ostracised or made to feel ashamed for their fascination with the macabre; for women who don't often see a nuanced depiction of their emotional experience in film; for anybody who enjoys cinematic, understated character-driven drama; and for anyone that needs reminding of the healing power in the kindness of strangers.
