Fugue

Fugue is an Urban Neo-Western. Our Western hero is Mia, a loner drug dealer who works nights in London. During the course of one night, a deal gone wrong confronts her with her past life. Fugue places the Spaghetti Western genre within in a gritty urban aesthetic to tell a story about taking on a new identity, and whether it's ever possible to escape yourself.

Have you ever had the feeling that in London it always seems to take longer to return from somewhere than it did to get there? Mia left her identity and life behind years ago to become an anonymous drug dealer in the fictional borough of Fleadham. Over the course of one night she is thrust back into her past life as she tries to save a stranger's life.

Mia is a drug dealer working nights in London. One night, she is told that she is to deliver a packet to Fleadham Tower. The deal goes wrong, and Mia unwittingly saves a young woman, Naz, from certain death.

Mia and Naz make their escape, with Naz begging Mia to help her. But the powerful gangster Kane, who has been hunting Mia for years, is now on their trail.

Naz convinces Mia to take her to the person that helped her disappear last time. Meanwhile, Kane realises Mia has resurfaced. The film unfurls as a hunt, with Kane attempting to track down Mia and Naz before they can escape his grasp. They are desperate. He is unrelenting.

Fugue was conceived at a time when the streets of London were desolate. For years I had been feeling a deep alienation from the urban environment I was raised in. While cycling around the streets in the middle of the night, past the skyscrapers, past the Victorian pubs, past the old industrial wharfs, I found the empty space gave the city breath. I saw in that space the scale, the romanticism, the savagery, and the tragedy of the Westerns that I loved.

Out of that came this story. A story about feeling at odds with your life, about choosing to run and not to confront, about the inability to escape yourself. We all have within us two people: the person we are and the person we want to be. This film explores the balance between those ideals and the forces which disrupt that balance.

Fugue is an Urban Neo-Western. It draws from the narrative structures and style of the Western genre, while thrusting them in a gritty, street-level aesthetic. It is set in our modern frontier: the grungy urban environment of London at night. The key reference points are the Safdie Brothers’ Good Time, Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad, Wim Wenders’ Paris, Texas, and Sergio Leone’s For A Few Dollars More.

We want to create a short film that we can send out to festivals and share with as many people as possible, and for this project each donation makes a huge difference towards that goal. The funds would allow us to increase our production value in a number of departments, from securing impressive and evocative locations to ensuring all prop guns are realistic and operated safely.
