Getaway

Getaway is a funny, uplifting and liberating short that dismantles shame around sexual freedom. Our story opens with our protagonist, Daniel. He is running frantically through the countryside, desperately trying to escape something, though exactly who - or what - is chasing him is unclear. The tension mounts, and then…black.
We re-open on an idyllic seaside campsite. Quaint, quiet, beautiful and mundane. The kind of place where the residents have been visiting for the last ten years, recycling the same anecdotes and chatting about the weather. They know the local walking routes like the back of their hand and can recite the menu at the local pub. Daniel sets up camp, hoping for a break from the city. Struggling to process his recent break-up, he just wants some time to himself and a distraction from reaching out to his ex. Where better than a boring seaside campsite to bury your head in the sand and find some peace and quiet…?
But Daniel immediately notices something peculiar in the air. He feels watched, everywhere he turns there seem to be a pair of eyes peeking out, scrutinising his every move. Is it friendly? Threatening? Is he just imagining things? After an awkward encounter with an eccentric couple in the communal showers, Daniel’s suspicions begin to grow. Maybe things aren’t as mundane as they seem. He might have to sleep with one eye open tonight.
Later that night, the couple make an unsolicited visit to Daniel’s tent and he finally understand what’s been feeling so strange about this campsite: This is a fun campsite. A place for swingers, throuples, poly-couples and all the rest. After a twinge of temptation — he has never considered something like this before — it becomes too much for Daniel and he pulls away. He says he’ll just stick to camping. It’s the kind of shame around sexual freedom that engendered his breakup.
That night in his dreams, we revisit the chase scene from the film’s opening. Now, however, we can see what is chasing Daniel: it is a crowd of naked people, people he has seen in the campsite. He awakes with a start. The next morning Daniel reflects on what the night could have been and finds himself regretting a missed opportunity. Emboldened by a new sense of adventure, Daniel seeks out the couple hoping they will show him a side to himself he hasn’t met before.
That evening, as it gets dark, Daniel’s tent is faintly illuminated. Inside, three silhouettes slowly become one.

Getaway asks prescient questions about sexual liberation, kink stigma, and fear. It playfully challenges us to reflect on our own sexual curiosity and our role in the ubiquitous conversation around sexual freedom. While these conversations are increasingly making it into the mainstream, they are often superficial and treat kink as a punchline. The film's discussion of sexual freedom, despite its inherent humour, seeks to sensitively and honestly unpick our audiences’ assumptions and deep rooted fears.
As we join Daniel on his journey of overcoming both his prejudices of the camper’s community, as well as fears of his own sexual desires, we are presenting a light-hearted mirror to our audiences - How does fear and shame affect our desires?
Getaway is a playful, sensitive, and hilarious journey of stepping out of your comfort zone, overcoming your fears, and, ultimately, finding your kink.
