Synopsis:
Lyn isn’t ready to put a busy life on hold for her mother, Margaret, who has progressive vascular dementia. At first, replaying Charles III’s coronation - the elder-care equivalent of a child’s favourite cartoon - plus the kindness of grandson Josh, keeps Margaret calm. But when Lyn’s frustration boils over and a distressed Margaret wanders out into the night, Lyn begins to see her mother differently. Through moments of humour, tenderness, and even absurdity, she discovers the bittersweet power of meeting a loved one exactly where they are.

Why this story matters:
Happy & Glorious explores duty and resentment versus love and connection when caring for someone with dementia, capturing the heartbreak but also the dark humour of reversing roles between parent and child. It’s not simply about what dementia takes away, but what remains: moments of joy, shared laughter, and flashes of the person they once were.
With dementia affecting nearly a million people in the UK and numbers predicted to triple in the next 25 years, this quirky, heartfelt British take on an issue that affects people all over the world will resonate for many families. It reminds the audience that sometimes the most loving thing we can do is step into someone else’s fractured world, even if only for a moment.
The charity DementiaUK kindly reviewed the script to make sure Happy & Glorious authentically reflects lived experience and offer a wider perspective on dementia — accurate, moving, hopeful.
“I was really impressed with the portrayal of Margaret’s dementia, as well as the impact it had on Lyn and the wider family. The humour, sadness, and frustration felt very familiar to families we support.” Amy Pepper, Admiral Nurse Research Assistant, DementiaUK
