The Hidden Law Of Gravity
WHAT’S THE STORY?
The Hidden Law of Gravity is the story of two young men, Harry and Ollie, who grew up in a small rural English town. When they were seventeen, they shared an instinctual intimate moment. Harry soon left for a life in London, and Ollie stayed. The film takes place a few years later, when Harry returns for a weekend. Set over one night, at the local working men's club, we see how their relationship with acceptance has quietly diverged.
‘I really want to touch upon those moments in our youth, where lad culture is mixed in with experimentation’
Where, perhaps in another world, these two people who feel drawn together wouldn’t think twice about being open with their feelings for each other. For Harry & Ollie, it doesn’t feel safe, so they communicate, even subconsciously, in hidden signals, lingering touches, and eye contact.
As Queer individuals, we have learnt a secret language, almost subconsciously, the ability to detect something more in someone. I sometimes feel film & TV don’t quite give this the right attention. Films portray it as a forced, awkward kiss of a passion that they can’t contain or a sudden emotional breakthrough where everything makes sense, but real life isn’t that simple. The real moments that matter are smaller.
‘I think there is a misconception around how far we’ve come as a society. Many people still feel that they must stay closeted. If you look at rural towns, you’ll find blank profiles all over gay dating apps.’
The script also examines how we respond to our environment, for Harry and Olllie, how they come to terms with their sexuality going into their 20s. Harry has gone away and found ‘his people’ in a liberal environment, whereas Ollie, who arguably shares the same views and feelings, has retreated inwards. I think there is a misconception around how far we’ve come as a society. Many people still feel that they must stay in the closet, if you look at rural towns, you’ll find blank profiles all over the gay dating apps. Even Harry, in this story, is not 'out' at home. It’s hard for these rural boys, who we know come in all shapes and sizes, to experiment in a meaningful way, and it gets wrapped in lad culture, where they’ll do ’gay things’ but compartmentalise it as ’lads being lads’.
