The film's tone balances romance with moments of introspection, allowing audiences to reflect on the beauty of connection and the complexity of cultural exchange. As the landscapes shift from vibrant urban scenes to tranquil natural vistas, they mirror Aron and Mya's evolving relationship, resonating with themes of love, growth, and self-discovery. set against the backdrop of Vietnam's stunning landscapes—from the serene rice paddies of Sapa to the lush jungles of the Central Highlands.
The Last Room in Hanoi is not just a love story; it’s a poignant exploration of identity and the transformative power of travel, leaving viewers with a sense of hope and an appreciation for the beauty found in different cultures.
WHY VIETNAM
Vietnam is a country without a fundamental centre, a ruptured mobile state where images, time, space, characters and stories fold and weave upon each other with no real certainty and always ready to vanish from our gaze.
Vietnam in ‘The Last Room in Hanoi’ is the common bond between the two, constantly depicting an irony. The large cities, home to so many, and at the same time the vistas of the north feel so lonely. The visual fabric of time has more to do with affect memory displacement. It is about seeing as well as not seeing, appearance, disappearance.
Films like ‘The Last Room in Hanoi’ wouldn’t be this way if it wasn’t for the space in which they are made. And Vietnam is a visceral space. It’s a light space - it’s a space of energy - this is electric - it’s the way the people move - it’s the energy of Vietnam. It’s the excitement of the encounter on the street.
It’s a garish, exuberant possibly empty world. This is what the landscapes represent and our characters in ‘The Last Mermaid ‘are in the very heart of this world.
