What is The Light; Urban Chronicles?

The Light; Urban Chronicles is a series of 6 (5 thus far) episodes. The campaign will specifically look to raise funds for episode 6, which we consider to be the series finale and that will push the series - as well as the character - forward with new insights and reveals.

Who is Urban Stranger?

The series establishes a world where Urban Stranger appears at any time or place to aide in altering a protagonist's outcome, creating a series of creepy vignettes that [entertainingly] essay off-kilter, real world dilemmas... But one question has, so far, remained: who is Urban Stranger?

Episode 6

In episode 6, a businessman – on his way home from work – stops to give a homeless man (Urban Stranger) some change. A mental joust ensues around the businessman's shrouded past, threatening wider revelations. But can he hold his own against the omnipotent Urban Stranger? Episode 6 explores themes such as belonging, power, responsibility and duty, as we broach Urban Stranger's equally secretive past for the first time. Episode 6 completes the series and, as such, addresses burning questions.

Director's statement

I love thrilling and suspenseful stories, yet my sensibilities also seek narratives with social and emotional heft, and The Urban Chronicles series has provided room for both; allowing me the opportunity to create a thrilling genre piece awash with real world relevance – to tie underserved narratives in an eerily entertaining bow. 

Using Urban Stranger as the catalyst, we explore the motivations behind our darker collective impulses, with topics ranging from the meaning of one's faith, the price of true social commitment, the psychological ramifications of violent actions, and the pitfalls of prejudgement, mining themes of shame, guild, denial, faith, rage, conflict and acceptance, in a way that will make audiences think and reflect, as well as feel.

Festivals and awards

The Light; Urban Chronicles has received recognition from festivals as far reaching as Sydney and Melbourne (Australia), Austin (USA), Berlin (Germany), Ontario (Canada), as well as Manchester, Cardiff, Brighton and London (UK) – receiving over 30 selections and 2 awards (including "Best Thriller") to date. Just as exciting is the fact that the festival circuit still has a considerable way to go for us, with many more exciting possibilities going forward.

Why join the journey?

We felt it would be fitting – having come to you for our first episode, Faith – to complete the circle by returning to you, our most loyal supporters.

It's most definitely been a wild journey in the interim, where we at times learnt the true nature of the term 'sacrifice'; both on an individual level as series producer, writer, director and editor – to name a few titles! – as well as collectively as a team, as we forged lasting bonds (with some truly testing moments) through our collective love of the filmmaking process, learning in real-time what it takes to create an effective functioning team. 

We also feel that it's important to keep our audience/supporters close, as we continue to expand our reach moving forward. It is you the audience, after all, that we're ultimately telling our stories for...

Where do your contributions go?

The simple answer is everywhere. When making a film, there's no shortage of places to use funds, and the truth is – in line with the five completed episodes – what we're requesting will ultimately make for a modest production. Experience is pivotal, and has taught us to be economical whilst still getting the most bang for our buck! The main sources of expenditure will go towards renting equipment and locations, paying for talent in front and behind camera, and catering.

Our timeline

We're looking to start shooting in the latter part of 2022! It's been a busy year behind the scenes, but we take shooting – and preproduction in particular – very seriously, which means taking the necessary time to do things correctly. This not being our first rodeo though, we can promise you that our "preproduction phase" will definitely be well spent!
