    Writer's Statement

I wrote Mirror, Mirror out of a deep awareness of what it means to be a Black woman navigating spaces that were not built for us. In the entertainment and fashion industries, spaces historically dominated by whiteness, Black women are often expected to be exceptional simply to be seen, yet our feelings, insecurities, and humanity are routinely dismissed. The same mistakes or vulnerabilities that are granted compassion for our white counterparts become magnified, criticized, or used to justify our erasure.

As a Black woman attempting to break into an industry that so easily discredits and overlooks people like me, this film became an internal outcry; a way to articulate the pressures, contradictions, and emotional toll of being both visible and invisible. Marie’s story reflects the tension between legacy and loss, between being celebrated and simultaneously forgotten, and the psychological weight of having to uphold an image of perfection just to remain relevant.

Most importantly, Mirror, Mirror is a tribute to the older Black women who paved the way, who fought to exist in these industries long before I could. Many of them were never given their flowers, their softness, or the space to simply be human. This film honours them, acknowledges their impact, and insists that their stories, and their reflections deserve to be seen.

    Synopsis

Mirror, Mirror is a psychological drama that follows Marie, a legendary Black supermodel confronting the pressures of beauty, aging, and legacy in an industry that glorifies youth while discarding the women who built it. As she prepares for a high-stakes return to the spotlight, Marie is forced to confront the reflections, both literal and symbolic, that have shaped her career, her identity, and her sense of worth.
Set against the glossy yet unforgiving world of fashion, the film explores the internal conflicts Black women face while occupying spaces that demand perfection but offer little compassion. Through a blend of memory, illusion, and quiet introspection, Mirror, Mirror examines what it means to be seen and forgotten.
