New Moon Monologues
New Moon Monologues are a monthly platform established for emerging writers based around the lunar cycle. Launched by Erin Holland and Grace O’Keefe, aka the Queens of Cups, in the Autumn of 2020, the new writing nights have featured over 30 playwrights, poets, and writers from all over the world.
New Moon Monologues
March's New Moon Monologues theme is "Begin Again". The submission deadline is February 27th, the full moon and the performance will be on the next new moon, March 13th.
In the spirit of the theme, it will be a bit of a different structure for New Moon Monologues. We are currently doing a crowdfunding campaign in order to pay all of our artists in the future. The amount we are able to pay writers will be dependent on the success of the crowdfunding campaign, but it will be at least £30, as we've already raised £1700.
To submit, we are asking writers to donate £3 to the campaign for each monologue they submit. That money will go directly towards paying the writers who are featured. Each writer will also receive extensive feedback. Please, email all submissions to email@example.com with the same email you use to donate.
New Moon Monologues is a new writing night guided by the cycles of the moon: We put out the call for submissions on the New Moon, read through the applications on the Full Moon, and close the cycle with a live performance of ten to twelve ‘monologues’ on the next New Moon.
Last year we hosted three events, each with its own theme, including “2020”, “Breakups” and “After Dark”. Each night received over 500 views across Facebook and YouTube. We’ve featured both emerging and award-winning writers, as well as actors and directors from the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the United States. The Queens of Cups are thrilled with the community that’s been established by this writing night, but in 2021, we want to go further.
While we have loved working on New Moon Monologues for the past 6 months, one thing that has been lacking is the volunteer basis of this work. This past year has been an incredibly difficult time for artists. While we’ve been incredibly fortunate to find writers and performers who are willing to give the world their words and their work, the Queens of Cups believe artists deserve to be paid. We’ve been able to run New Moon Monologues for free, but we know we can make the event bigger and better with some funding in place. We hope to use this crowdfunding campaign to launch the New Moon Monologues as a paid event that will become self-sustaining in the future.
Grace O'Keefe and Erin Holland, aka the Queens of Cups, met at Royal Holloway while Grace was completing her MA in Directing and Erin was completing her MA in Playwriting. They quickly bonded over their shared Irish heritage, their past experiences as teachers, and their passion for women in comedy. Between the two of them, they have 7 degrees, including a PGCE in English with Drama, a BFA in Musical Theatre, and master’s degrees in English, Directing, and Playwriting.
The Queens of Cups are committed to elevating new and emerging voices, particularly during this difficult time for the theatre industry. They are establishing a matriarchal theatre practice within their dramaturgy in their digital and real-life productions. Thus far, they have produced three New Moon Monologues, Fish Bowl Fest, a Digital Fringe Festival, and the Vagina Duologues, which they also wrote and starred in. Find out more on their Website, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
The vast majority of the funds we raise from this campaign will go directly back to the artists who make New Moon Monologues happen. We have budgeted £1000 for the production of each monthly new writing night, £800 of which is going directly to the writers and performers. The rest will go to marketing and administrative costs to make sure the writing night continues to grow and run smoothly as we expand.
Our initial goal is £3000, which will cover March, April and May’s New Moon Monologues as digital events. We would love, however, to reach our stretch goal of £5000, which would allow us to host an in-person edition of New Moon Monologues in June (Corona Restrictions Pending) that would bring our community from the digital sphere into real life.
We have a wide selection of fun and affordable rewards for both artists and art-lovers. You can pre-purchase a ticket to the New Moon Monologues of your choice for £5. The tickets come with an exclusive phone background, a perfect birthday gift for Spring Birthdays, or just a good way to remind yourself what month it is during this crazy year. You can get tickets to all three New Moon Monologues for £15 and get all the phone backgrounds, plus June (s/o to all my geminis).
For £7, you get access to either our New Moon Writing Ritual on February 11th or our Full Moon Writing Ritual on February 27th. If you donate £21, you get access to all of the digital events, including the New Moon Monologues and the Writing Rituals.
We have a very special reward for all those baby witches out there! If you donate £33, you can choose either a personalized Birth Chart reading from Grace or a personalized Tarot Card reading from Erin. It’s the ideal way to get a reading for a competitive price, with all the proceeds directly supporting the arts!
Those are our affordable awards for any individual who wants to chip in a little bit to help support writers and performers at this time. For our big spenders, we have tiers of support named after Moon Deities, so you can become a Lunar God or Goddess! You’ll have access to all of the previous rewards, plus our eternal gratitude.
There really is no easier (or more fun) way to directly support artists during these troubled times. Please, check out our campaign video, watch one of the previous New Moon Monologues, and consider supporting us. Thank you for reading this far, we’re sending moon blessings your way.
