Andy Mcleod
Director
I started my career 20 years ago as an actor with a background in devised theatre. I was a member of the in-house ensemble at The New Diorama theatre, run by the current artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre in London, David Byrne. My acting career has spanned across theatre, film and television and I became a director in 2019. I have directed 2 short films – Strange Waters & The Day of the Sun Dog. Both have had successful festival runs with The Day of the Sun Dog winning – Best Performance (Paul McGann) & Best Drama at Brighton Rocks International Film Festival, Best of Festival at Fortean Film Festival, Best Dog Award at Ealing Film Festival. I was also nominated for ‘Best Director’ at Thrill, Chills and Kills Film Festival for Strange Waters. I currently am in pre-production for a play, Derry Boys, to be performed at Theatre 503 in London in early 2025.
Andy's vision for Pass The Salt
Pass the Salt will tackle huge societal themes such as domestic abuse, robbery and murder. I intend to present these themes through the prism of humour and vibrancy whilst taking great care to honour the seriousness of those themes. The films’ intention will be to challenge attitudes and architypes and express just how far victims of abuse can be pushed to break free from their oppressors. I will seek to challenge the moral aspects of these actions using entertaining and playful storytelling.
The film features 2 strong female characters that take outwardly extreme actions to change their circumstances. In a world in 2024, where we are fighting for more equality in all areas, we need to meet more of these characters on a regular basis and follow their journey. This has never been more prevalent than it is right now, and this fight continues. As a director, I am driven by creating new and vibrant stories that challenge the norm with an air of irreverence and wit and I believe that this script has the potential to do just that. We will build a diverse team both in front and behind the camera and will seek to provide opportunities for early career filmmakers.
The overall aim will be for the film to be funny, exciting, challenging and enlightening.
