Save The Unicorn
Save The Unicorn is a short comic mockumentary set in the heart of East London, in The Unicorn pub as it faces imminent closure. When a team of documentary makers arrive to save the local haunt, they encounter a whirlwind of animosity, distrust, and fame-seeking from the landlady, staff, and regulars, turning their mission into a dramatic struggle to preserve a community institution.

Save The Unicorn
The story follows Susan, The Unicorn's fiery manager, and a small, eccentric group of bar staff and regulars. When a documentary crew arrives to help promote the pub, comedic chaos ensues. The characters include Pete, an overzealous bartender and musician, Ellie, a young and uncertain barmaid, and Tony, a mysterious regular who never speaks. As the crew films the day-to-day life of the pub, tensions flare between Susan and a rival pub, The Old Queen, suspected of sabotaging The Unicorn. The regulars and staff form an oddball family as they band together to save the pub through wild schemes, including promotions and a drag karaoke night. However, their efforts lead to a series of absurd incidents, from stolen garden furniture to an escalating rivalry with the neighbouring pub. The film blends humour, misfit relationships, and the resilient community spirit of East End pubs. In the end, despite financial losses and questionable tactics, the characters emerge united, leaving the audience questioning whether The Unicorn is truly worth saving but appreciating the bizarre yet heartfelt community it harbours.
"Save the Unicorn" draws inspiration from my personal experiences working in a similar pub while attending film school. During that time, I was surrounded by an array of colourful, eccentric individuals whose stories and quirks naturally lent themselves to storytelling. These experiences ignited a desire to immortalize the lively atmosphere, humorous exchanges, and touching moments that play out daily in such places. The film explores the pub as a microcosm of community life, a space where diverse personalities come together and unexpected absurdities unfold. From the bar's enigmatic regulars to the delightfully eccentric and occasionally lost bar staff, every character adds to the fabric of this quirky world, reflecting the uniqueness of local watering holes in London’s East End. Through a comedic lens, "Save the Unicorn" not only captures the humour of these interactions but also delves into the underlying warmth and camaraderie that makes these pubs so beloved. Ultimately, "Save the Unicorn" is about more than just the laughs—it’s a celebration of the culture, charm, and enduring appeal of the East End pub. Through this project, I aim to introduce a new generation to the irreplaceable role these institutions play in fostering genuine human connections and providing a safe space where the mundane meets the extraordinary, and where community is king.
