The Sound Of A Tree Falling
The Sound Of A Tree Falling is a Taiwan–UK co-production to be shot on 16mm film—a format now nearly obsolete in Taiwan—in April 2026. Set within the mist and rain of Taiwan’s mountainous landscapes, the film reflects on death and the meaning of existence within a damp, atmospheric terrain. Informed by her film education in the UK, the director reexamines local subjects through a cross-cultural lens. This film is for those who encounter death and separation for the first time. Through ordinary conversations and a long walk, it unfolds the absurdity, tenderness, and silent weight of mourning.
The Sound of a Tree Falling follows two young people who, in the aftermath of a close friend’s death, set out into the mountains in search of her grave. Their journey stretches from the city into the forest. Along the way, they recall lighthearted memories from their school days and speak casually about the future, their tone easy, yet persistently skirting the weight of their loss. As they move deeper into the mountains, suppressed emotions begin to surface. Their differing attitudes toward death lead to conflict, and both are drawn into questioning what death itself might mean.
What is the appropriate age to get married? Thirty, maybe. What is the appropriate age to have children? Before thirty-five, there is still time. But what is the appropriate age to die? At 27, a friend of mine died, very inappropriately. At an age meant for wedding invitations and baby showers, I received news of her death instead. As someone new to losing a friend, I felt less grief than confusion. Another friend and I went into the mountains to visit her grave. The absurdity of that journey—and the questions it forced us to ask—became this film.
