DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
I wanted to direct Tom's script because it conceptualize an idea that we can all find familiar and relatable, something seemingly simple, not knowing what film to watch. This opens into a heated discussion that spirals into an intense and overly exposed argument which upon first read I found really funny and would exactly the style of script I wanted to direct.
The ensuing argument hyperbolises the indecision around the struggle of what to watch in the over saturated market that is streaming services. As someone who places importance and value in curated physical media collections within this uncertain world of streaming services, this side of the film really stood out to me. Visual warmth sets up a false sense of security that luls the audience into thinking that this could be a sweet romantic movie night and that is exactly where one of the characters hopes this evening is going to go.
I aim to use wide deep focused shots to display an unspoken distance between the leads of the film, later the film will utilise a strong change to close up shots to emphasis the intense and vibrant argument that forms. For this visual styling, I am inspired by films including Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story, and scenes from Normal People and We Live In Time. The later of which has had a major influence on both my directing style and the aesthetic styling of our film as it similarly features major scenes being arguments in open-planned kitchen/dinner areas.
