Sugar High
Haunted by a neglected childhood, Luna navigates her days with weed and her most trusted confidante, a bong named Christine. When her landlord demands rent, Luna decides to find work and enlists the advice of her dealer, Jakob, who also runs the ice-cream van at the local park.
A chance encounter with a mother and daughter sparks a connection, and Luna becomes the girl’s babysitter. She quickly bonds with Nur, a child navigating her parents’ divorce, as she sees herself reflected in the girl’s pain.
As their fragile friendship grows, both confront past and present trauma, culminating in a moment of mutual care during a parental argument, where they protect each other in a simple, poignant gesture.
Sugar High is a semi-autobiographical comedy-drama inspired by many years of working as a nanny. I've had the pleasure of looking after amazing little-humans and create some life-long bonds. Helping them grow has in turn helped me process difficult emotions and memories that my younger self didn't know how to navigate.
Just like Luna, in this film, helps Nur come out of her shell and express herself, Nur also helps Luna realise how disconnected from the world she has become. They mirror each other in their vast similarities, whilst being two decades apart, and they'll help each other break free of their solitary confinement.
It's a sweet, funny, and touching story of two little souls forming an alliance.
I hope that their friendship can serve as a warm hug, and a delicate hand-holding while we continue to grow ourselves.
