Unravelling
Unravelling is a psychological short set in Mexico City, following Cielo, a young woman who flees her wedding and disappears into the city’s nightlife. As memory and fear begin to unravel her sense of self, she is drawn back to the house where she grew up, and forced to confront her past. The film is directed by Sienna Nava, with cinematography by award winning Mexican DOP Sebastian Hiriart.
The film has been self-funded through savings. We are now raising funds to support our cast and crew properly and to realise the film at the level it deserves. Any support genuinely makes a difference and helps bring this project to life.
About the Film
This is a very personal film.
With Unravelling, I wanted to depict a woman we both empathise with and feel disturbed by. To feel her fragility, but also her intensity and autonomy. I’m interested in women as layered, contradictory and not easily defined.
What Cielo is carrying didn’t start with her. It runs through her family. Her grandmother, her father, her mother who left. There’s a mix of inherited and inflicted trauma beneath everything, and this moment feels like a tipping point.
That idea of inheritance also connects to cultural identity and belonging. It exists in Cielo’s history, but also in my own. I come from a culturally mixed family spanning different parts of the world. My grandfather, born in Acapulco, often said he felt like a fish in the wrong pond in London. His words and my family’s history shaped my understanding of the complexities of mixed heritage, something reflected in Cielo’s own experience. The film stays with Cielo as what’s been passed down finally catches up with her.
Where we are now
Up until now, the project has been completely self funded through savings. We’ve built a small and committed team across Mexico and the UK, including an incredible cast, who really believe in the film. The next step is making sure we can properly support everyone involved and bring the project to life in the way it deserves.
Why we need your support
We are raising funds to cover the core costs of production and post production. This includes equipment, locations, production design, and making sure our cast and crew are paid fairly for their work.Every contribution goes directly into the film and allows us to make it with care, and without compromise.
Support The Film
