    OUR ASK.

Practical and visual effects will be used throughout the film to subtle but compelling effect. We are raising funds to support this area of the process.

Symbolism and imagery will convey Wedad’s inner conflict. Visual effects will help to achieve this, as well as create a sense of surrealism, dream logic, and poetry.

We have determined we'll need VFX for several scenes (see storyboards below for further details).

    SPECIAL THANKS.

    DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT.

WEDAD is loosely inspired by my mother’s experience although it is not intended as a straight retelling of her singular story.

As a young woman living in her home country of Morocco, my mother found herself stuck. A divorcee with two young children, living with her parents in their modest one-room bungalow, she saw no future for herself. After some painful contemplation, my mother surreptitiously sold the gold bangles from her dowry, obtained a passport and walked out of her life, leaving behind her children and everything she knew.

I wanted to reimagine the lead-up to this moment of departure in an attempt to unearth the complex emotions she must have felt.

This short film is partly a way to inquire into, organise and explain narratives which have oftentimes been oral accounts passed down through generations of my family and therefore embellished over time, but in a broader sense, this film tells the story of the boundaries of maternal subjectivity and ambivalence.

I present a story about a young woman who finds motherhood difficult to reconcile with her own vision of herself and her future.

Through this film, I wish to explore the themes of traditional gender-related constraints and struggles, motherhood, self-identity, as well as the taboo of parental regret, a topic which transcends cultures and borders.
