Lisa, a disillusioned art student, struggles to make artwork with the mounting pressure of her upcoming crit. 

Our main character is searching to feel understood but her despondent demeanour deepens her fear of vulnerability. This internal conflict finds friction against her peers, who have differing motivations around creativity.

The story unfolds in three environments where you would find art. The university crit space, where students present their artwork for peers and tutors to engage with and comment on. Lisa's studio space, and an exhibition event.

 

 

Through this film we’re exploring the struggle inherent in creative pursuits. There are also themes of loneliness and how it acts as a driving force as well as a challenge to creativity. Art can be a tool for connection, to self express and be seen deeply/intangibly, but the introspection required can also fall into isolation. 

Anchored in Lisa’s disillusioned perspective, the story follows her emotional journey of finding confidence in her vulnerability. We see her paralysis turn into catharsis as the complex and intricate dynamics between art and ego play out. Crit looks at the delicate experience of growing into adulthood and wanting to be seen but not quite being ready for it. Not quite knowing yourself and being asked who you are and what you think. Making art and letting it be a mirror. 

This film is grounded in the very real space of an art school, with the environments and art acting almost as another character. Through the production design we aim to create a truth to life while authentically observing from Lisa’s distorted perspective. We want to use the cinematic language to convey the profound and humanising experience of loneliness to create a visual experience that mirror’s Lisa’s interior one.

 

 

We are a female led production consisting of passionate filmmakers deeply committed to this project and bringing the vision of Crit to life.
