AYA is a young British-Japanese woman learning to navigate her life and relationships as an adult. When WILL, her first serious boyfriend suddenly tells her he loves her, she does not know how to respond. This awkward moment leads Aya to reflect on her life as a child having moved to the UK and assimilating to a new country with her Japanese mother.

アヤ（ 大人として自分の人生と人間関係を学ぶ若いイギリス系日本人女性）は、ウィル（アヤにとって初めての真剣なボーイフレンド）から突然「愛している」と告げられ、どう答えていいかわからなかった。この気まずい瞬間をきっかけに、アヤはイギリスに移り住み、日本人の母親とともに新しい国に順応していった幼少期の自分の人生を振り返ることになる。

I Never Learned I Love You is based on Meg's own story as a child and the challenges she faced growing up, making this story extremely personal to her and one that she wishes she had growing up.

『I Never Learned I Love You』は、メグ自身の子供時代の物語に基づいており、彼女が成長する過程で直面した困難がこの物語をきわめて馴染み深いものにしている。この物語は彼女自身が幼いころに欲しかったものである。

Through this film, we want to explore Aya’s attempt at navigating her Japanese and British identities by showing different periods of her life. When she is younger, she feels very connected to her Japanese heritage, but as she gets older, she distances herself away from her roots. As we see the changes she undergoes at each stage of her life, we reflect with Aya on the things that affect who we become and how others’ perceptions of us impact how we see ourselves.

この映画では、彼女の人生のさまざまな時期を映し出すことで、日本人とイギリス人というアイデンティティーを見つけ出そうとするアヤの試みを追います。 子供の頃、アヤは日本文化と強く繋がっていると感じていましたが、大人になるにつれ、自身のルーツと距離を置くようになります。青春の各段階の経験による彼女の変化を見ることで、どのような人間になるかを左右し、自分自身をどのように見るかに影響する事柄ついて、アヤとともに考えていきます。

With food being an integral part of culture, it will play a key role in I Never Learned I Love You. Through food, we will see this “rift” that Aya experiences between her two cultures. In many Asian countries such as Japan, it is uncommon for people to say or hear the words “I love you”. However, to ask somebody if they’ve eaten or offer them food, is an expression of respect and love.

食事が文化のなくてはならない一部であるように、『愛してるって言えない』でも食事は重要な役割を果たします。食事を通して、アヤが2つの文化の間で経験する「溝」が見えてきます。日本など多くのアジア諸国では、「愛している」という言葉を口にしたり聞いたりしない人は珍しくありません。しかし、誰かに食事をしたか尋ねたり、食べ物や飲み物を出したりすることは、尊敬と愛の表現です。

We feel that the UK media is still lacking in telling multicultural stories. We believe this is an important story to tell as there are so many people who, like us, grow up with more than one culture yet don’t realise how common our shared experiences are.

イギリスメディアは多文化であることについての物語を伝えることがまだ少ないと感じています。私たちはこれを伝えてゆくべき重要な物語だと信じています。複数の文化と共に育ちながら、私たちが共有する体験が共通したものであると気づいていない人々がたくさんいるからです。

Since our film follows the characters at different stages of their lives, we will be filming in various locations at different time periods with multiple actors. For this, our initial funding goal of 15,000 GBP will allow us to get the film shot which we hope to raise through this Kickstarter.

Jennifer has acted in short films, and most notably did a Delta Airlines commercial directed by Oscar Boyson. Other professional credits include Adidas, Puma, Calvin Klein, Amazon, Starbucks, Netflix, lululemon, Disney, Redbull, and more.  Jennifer cherishes her Japanese/Norwegian background, and was one of Nike’s female representatives for AAPI Heritage Month this year. Haruka Kuroda is a U.K. based Japanese actress, voice-over artist, fight director and intimacy professional. Since graduating from Guildford School of Acting over two decades ago, she has embarked on a successful career in Theatre, TV & Film. Her most recent credits include: the RSC production of My Neighbour Totoro (Barbican), Amaterasu-Out of Cave (Arcola tent), Wit (Manchester Royal Exchange), Better Things (FX), Lovely Little Farm (Apple TV), EastEnders (BBC), Killing Eve (BBC America), Life (Colombia Pictures) and London Road (National Theatre & BBC Film). Michael McGarry is a British actor who trained in Theatre Arts at Drama St. Mary’s. Since graduating, he has appeared in many films such as Sleepless in Santa Monica (official Austin Film Festival selection), Reggie Yates’ debut film Pirates and the soon-to-be-released award winning film, Only Love Matters (Best Film, Andromeda Film Festival, New York Movie Awards, Berlin Indie Film Festival). Among his projects this year, he is involved in The Midnight Circles production of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Polly Holidays, Tragedy exhibited at the Tate, and the upcoming release of the short film Grand Total, scheduled for late this year. Outside of acting, Michael spends his time working for a non-profit organisation, The Zen Project, which brings well-being to those without access.

Jennifer Cornish is a half British, half Japanese 7 year old who was born in Japan. Her move to the UK at 2 years old was difficult at first as she did not understand the language well. But as her English got better, she started to enjoy school. Jennifer likes role-playing, singing, dancing, art, and writing stories. This will be her first film and she is looking forward to being a part of this film and sharing Japanese culture to UK audiences.

ジェニファー・コーニッシュはイギリス人と日本人の両親を持つ日本生まれの7歳です。2歳でイギリスに移住。最初は言葉がよくわからず苦労したが、英語が上手くなると学校を楽しみ始めた。ジェニファーは演じること、歌うこと、踊ること、アート、そして物語を書くことが好き。今作は彼女にとって初めての映画であり、この映画に出演し、イギリスの観客に日本文化をシェアすることを楽しみにしている。

Meg is a UK based, Japanese-American filmmaker who has grown up between the U.S. and Japan. In 2022, Meg's first film, Kid Heart - a musical short film set in Japan - was supported by Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia and Amuse Inc. which has won and been screened at many film festivals including Top Indie Awards, New York CineFest, and Vienna International Film Awards to name a few. Meg is also an experienced editor and video creator that's worked with Netflix, Adobe, Sony as well as Amazon Prime and BBC in production. She is passionate about telling multicultural and relationship-based stories and wants to see more Asian representation in films.

Collaborating with Meg on I Never Learned I Love You as a producer, Emma Kyung Mi Sheldrick who’s life, like Meg, was spent split between the UK and South Korea. She recently moved to the UK and started Plus Eight Two, a production company with a goal of telling more East Asian stories in the UK. In the last year, Emma has produced two short films Still Life (by Sarah Kim), a Korean/US production that featured a full Asian cast and crew, and Behind The Screams (by Holly Causer) a feminist indie horror short set in London. Emma has also contributed to larger projects as such as BTS: Permission To Dance On Stage - LA (Disney +), The 93rd Oscars Awards (The Academy Awards), Pachinko (Apple TV+) as well as a variety of branded projects for clients such as CNN Create, Maltesers, Youtube and Spotify.

Composer - Oli Gudgeon @oliver_gudgeon

Oli Gudgeon is a composer, music producer and pianist, based in London. He received his bachelor's at King’s College London and his master's at Cambridge University. As part of his training, Oli also took piano lessons at the Royal Academy of Music and summer composition classes at the Purcell School of Music. In 2022, Oli created the soundtrack to an eight-part TV series called Patterns. With his partner being Japanese, Oli has been steadily gaining knowledge about Japanese film, culture and language. He therefore has a strong interest in I Never Learned I Love You.

オーリー・ガジョンはイギリス、ロンドンを拠点とする作曲家、音楽プロデューサー、ピアニスト。2022年、オリは『PATTERNS』という8部構成のテレビシリーズのサウンドトラックを制作した。ロンドンのキングス・カレッジで学士号を、ケンブリッジ大学で修士号を取得した。トレーニングの一環として、オーリーは英国王立音楽院でピアノのレッスンを受け、パーセル音楽院では夏期作曲クラスを受講した。個人的なレベルでは、オーリーは『i Never Learned I Love You』のストーリーに興味を持っている。彼のパートナーが日本人で、イギリスで育ったからだ。オーリーはSOAS、ケンブリッジ、KCLで日本語を学び、日本文化、映画、文学に積極的に興味を持ち、知識を深めている。若い作曲家として、オリは日本の作曲家坂本龍一の音楽に深くインスパイアされた。

Andi is a South African writer and filmmaker who studied Filmmaking at Kingston School of Art London. Her work focuses on complex relationships with oneself and the people surrounding them as well as the struggles of cultural identity. Andi has worked closely with Meg and Emma providing practical production support with casting as well as helping out with the development of the story.

KOU is an illustrator who is based in Japan. She has worked on short films as well as creating art for musical artists. She loves to collaborate with other artists and is happy to work on I Never Learned I Love you as the film's illustrator, graphic designer, and translator.

Producer - Anna de Escobar @annaescobar

Anna de Escobar is a producer currently based in London. During the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, Anna assisted “Carnaby International” with sales and acquisitions.
To date, Anna has produced 8 short films across Spain, UK and Portugal. 
In 2013 she completed a production and public relations internship at Teatro Cinema A Barraca, a prestigious theatre company based in Lisbon. Since then, she has immersed herself in the artistic field, focusing on the audiovisual universe.

Elaine Zhao is originally from Hong Kong, where she co-directed the short 'Kaleidoscope Eyes' which won 'Best Film' at the Hong Kong Short Film Awards in 2012. Now based in London, she helps produce events, content and projects for Eastern Margins, a music label/collective that celebrates artists and culture from East and South East Asia, and is excited to learn more about film producing through projects like INLILY.

Ash is a Hong Kong and London-based cinematographer and camera operator, currently working on commercials, narrative features and shorts, documentaries and music videos. They have worked with Google, Adidas, Verizon, Samsung, DNEG and RadicalMedia, and some of their short film works have been selected for BAFTA and Academy Awards qualifying festivals. 
They are particularly interested in the socio-political impact of films, and are drawn to telling stories from queer and under-represented communities.

アシュは香港とロンドンを拠点として活動する映画監督であり、カメラオペレーターである。
現在、コマーシャル、長編、短編の物語、ドキュメンタリー、ミュージック ビデオの制作に取り組んでいる。制作では、Google、Adidas、Verizon、Samsung、DNEG、RadicalMedia と協力しており、短編映画作品のいくつかは BAFTA およびアカデミー賞の予選フェスティバルに選ばれている。
特に映画の社会政治的な影響に興味があり、クィアや取り上げられることの少ないコミュニティの物語を描くことに関心がある。

It is extremely important to hire a majority Asian cast & crew to bring this film to life. One of our biggest challenges is finding the right actors to play our characters as well as finding the right crew. We’ve even extended our search internationally for the right actor to play Aya. With this comes cost, but we are in the process of finalising some incredible talent to join our cast.
